CMU announces 2021 Leadership Scholarship recipients

David Nelson, Mia Loeppky, Matthew Pahl, and Eleanor Reimer are awarded this year's endowments: $3,500 annually up to four years, to a maximum value of $14,000 each.
CMU takes great pride in announcing the four winners of this year's Leadership Scholarships: David Nelson of Winnipeg, MB (Westgate Mennonite Collegiate); Mia Loeppky of Selkirk, MB (Lord Selkirk Regional Comprehensive Secondary School); Matthew Pahl of Morden, MB (Morden Collegiate Institute); and Eleanor Reimer of Winnipeg, MB (Sisler High School) are the winners of up to $14,000 each.

CMU recently installed new high-quality air purifiers throughout its Shaftesbury campus as its learning community returned to in-person and online hybrid classes for the winter semester.
The university is continually looking for ways to improve conditions on campus that will ensure the well-being of its students, staff, and faculty. This innovative technology from Greentech Environmental Canada adds "an additional layer of protection to the air quality on campus in a way that's financially doable and would encourage confidence to return to campus when we were able to do so," says Julene Sawatzky, Interim Director of Administration.

Why more and more CMU alumni are including small-scale agriculture in their life-paths, during and after school.
This year the CMU Farm celebrates its 10th anniversary season. And while the challenges of COVID-19 have reshaped things for the farm, from celebration plans to daily operations of their CSA project, Autumn's work is largely unaltered: harvest season proceeds apace, and the steward Metanoia Farmers' collective are already forming their plans for next season.

On Earth Day 2020, CMU officially became Climate Smart certified. Involved in this certification was a commitment to strategize various initiatives in which CMU would reduce greenhouse gas emissions on campus and become a more environmentally sustainable community. CMU's newest initiative, a composting project headed by graduate student Justin Eisinga, constitutes the first steps toward reducing greenhouse gasses by lowering the amount of waste build-up in landfills that contribute to the rising release of methane into the atmosphere.

CMU takes great pride in announcing the four winners of this year's Leadership Scholarships: Elizabeth Connelly of St. Bruno, SK (homeschooled); Hillary Jorgensen of Morris, MB (Morris School, K-12); Katrina Lengsavath of Winnipeg, MB (Gordon Bell High School); and Danika Warkentin of Pincher Creek, AB (St. Michael's Catholic School, K-12) are the winners of up to $14,000 each.

A CMU student has been awarded a prestigious Canada Graduate Scholarship worth $17,500 by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC). This is the first year CMU has been eligible to distribute this scholarship, due to the university's successful federal research funding.
Sarah Deckert is a student in CMU's Graduate School of Theology and Ministry, working on a Master of Arts in Theological Studies. The SSHRC scholarship will go towards the work she is doing on her thesis, which is currently titled, "Embodied Pneumatology: The Role of the Holy Spirit in Healing the Wounds of Colonialism."

Now expanded to two locations totalling 15 acres, the Metanoia Farmers Cooperative celebrates 10 years of learning, growing, and farming for change.
You may have heard of "emerging writers" or recognize the phrase "emergent church," but did you ever hear of emerging farmers?
The Metanoia Farmers Cooperative is a group of CMU students and alumni; though individual memberships shift with time, the collective as a whole is permanently responsible for running the CMU Farm, and working 14 acres of associated land near the village of Neubergthal. All of them are emerging farmers: lovers of God's good creation motived by their faith to learn and develop skills they may or may not have grown up with, in order to become practitioners of sustainable agriculture.

Since the novel Corona Virus COVID-19 began sweeping the globe back in January of this year, almost everything about how ordinary citizens conduct their lives has changed. More than anything, how we conduct our shared lives together has changed. From churchgoing to grocery shopping, from the workplace or classroom to the front porch or backyard—our collective vulnerability to illness has transmogrified the way communities now work, learn, and care together.
