CMU announces changes to senior administration team
CMU is pleased to announce new placements within its senior administration team with Charlie Peronto as the Dean of Student Life and John Unger as the Vice President, Administration & Finance.
Charlie Peronto – Effective July 1, Peronto will begin as Dean of Student Life. This follows exemplary work as Director, Student Life in 2020-21. Peronto previously served as CMU Residence Director for six years. Earlier work as the Pastor of Student Ministries at Steinbach MB Church and as Seniors and Indigenous Peoples Activity Coordinator with the Churchill Regional Health Authority also prepared Peronto for this role, given involvement with young adults and others coming from diverse backgrounds and faith homes.

On January 11, John H. Neufeld, former President and Associate Professor of Practical Theology at CMBC (from 1984-1997), passed away after many years of battling a series of severe health crises. Being the last long-term president before CMU became a university, Neufeld's presence and passion was a formative force that helped prepare the way for furthering the quality of education in what is now the CMU community.

On February 16, John Longhurst received the Lieutenant-Governor's Award for the Advancement of Interreligious Understanding, an annual honour presented to a Manitoban who embodies understanding between religious groups.
Longhurst graduated in 1979 from Mennonite Brethren Bible College, one of CMU's predecessor colleges, and was CMU's Director of Communications from 2005-09. He has been a freelance faith columnist and reporter at the Winnipeg Free Press since 2003. Two years ago, he initiated a project to increase religion coverage at the Free Press, one of the reasons he has earned this award.

Practicing theology from the bottom-up
Assuming a new position teaching theology at Canadian Mennonite University (CMU), Rev. Dr. Sunder John Boopalan and his family arrived in Winnipeg in October 2020 after a move, during the pandemic, from their home in Boston, MA. Growing up in the religious context of Pondicherry, a former French colony in southeast India, Boopalan was raised by his mother, a nurse and Hindu convert to Christianity, and his father, a lab technician and preacher, who together attended the "Bakht Singh Assemblies," a multi-lingual and multi-ethnic indigenous (that is, without foreign missionary history) church movement. Describing the religious atmosphere of his upbringing, Boopalan states that "there was an interesting mix of theological influences that combined pietist, holiness, and charismatic movements. Services were four hours and included plenty of music played with indigenous Indian instruments and would always end in a love feast cooked by church members and shared sitting around mats on the floor."

Dr. John Brubacher visits the library every day. But instead of books, this library contains millions of yeast clones.
Brubacher is Assistant Professor of Biology at Canadian Mennonite University (CMU), but is currently on a three-year research leave, of which he has two years left. He's working at the Morgridge Institute for Research in Madison, WI as Visiting Assistant Scientist in the institute's Newmark Lab. Researchers there utilize the tools of molecular cell biology and functional genomics to address several major biological problems.

CMU is proud to announce a new appointment in the faculty of Biblical and Theological Studies. Sunder John Boopalan (PhD, Princeton Theological Seminary) is an interdisciplinary writer and researcher specializing in the areas of political theologies and ethics, with personal emphases in the areas of Dalit Christianity and redress of structural or systemic wrongdoing. He is also an ordained minister in the Progressive Baptist tradition.

Despite all the uncertainty and obstacles the COVID-19 pandemic has caused, CMU is committed to working towards a bright future by continuing to deliver quality programming and education. This has included appointing John Balsillie as Vice President, Administration and Finance.
John Balsillie has spent the past six years as Executive Director of the Manitoba Band Association and the Canadian Band Association. Prior to that he was General Manager of St. John's Music. He is no stranger to CMU, though. He has taught as a sessional instructor in CMU's Redekop School of Business for five years.
