CMU Student Awarded Third-Place Finalist in Bi-National Speech Contest

Current CMU student Jubilee Dueck Thiessen is the third-place finalist in the bi-national C. Henry Smith Peace Oratorical Contest. Her speech, titled "Stewards of Joy: Answering the Call of Ecological Shalom," employs the Christian creation narrative alongside indigenous voices to bring her point across that "disciples of joy" who seek to follow Jesus should pursue a "stewardship of creation in response to our need for ecological shalom." Rather than being overcome with grief, Dueck Thiessen, elaborating on her speech, suggests that "the core of this issue is one of love, we only fear for creation because we love it."

Dear students, faculty, and staff of CMU,
A confirmed case of COVID-19 has been identified at the CMU Shaftesbury Campus. The individual was on campus on November 2 between the hours of 1:30 PM and 4:00 PM, and followed all public health measures instituted by CMU. This is a low-risk situation with no close contacts identified at CMU. No one is required to self-isolate from this exposure.

This fall, CMU has launched a partnership with REES (Respect, Educate, Empower Survivors), a new online platform for reporting sexual violence on campuses.
Eleven universities and colleges, all the post-secondary institutions in Manitoba except for the University of Manitoba, have committed to signing on to the initiative in 2020 or 2021. Charlie Peronto, CMU's Director of Student Life, says CMU is excited to partner with these other educational institutions and work collaboratively to break down the barriers to reporting sexual violence.

CMU starts the 2020-21 academic year as the only fully accredited Manitoba university to provide on-campus living and in-person classes beginning Fall 2020. As of September 8, undergraduate and graduate students enrolled at CMU's main campus sits at 617 students.
Preliminary reporting indicates an overall 1.9% decline in students enrolled in the CMU Shaftesbury campus undergraduate and graduate degree programs.

With lament, CMU announces its decision to discontinue the operations of the Outtatown Discipleship School indefinitely due to the uncertainties perpetuated by the global COVID-19 pandemic.
The evolving scope and effect of the global pandemic and the unpredictability of future conditions have clarified CMU's need to discontinue the Outtatown program. The university cannot anticipate how the ground will settle within church and society, or what kind of program may be feasible and desirable to students in the aftermath of the pandemic. We acknowledge the impact of this decision for CMU, the church, the many students whose lives have been profoundly shaped by Outtatown, and the cherished partners in Canada and Guatemala—many of whom bear a disproportionate burden of these very challenging times.

The Practicum program at CMU is integral to the learning experience. In fact, every student is required to complete a practicum in order to graduate. It is these opportunities that help students weave together their learning in the classroom with their interests outside of it. CMU is committed to continue growing and enriching this program, which has included appointing Dr. Christine Kampen Robinson as Director of Practica.

The library is full, the hallways are buzzing, and another busy academic year at Canadian Mennonite University (CMU) is well on its way. And it is thanks to the generosity of donors, churches, and the Manitoba Government that any of this is possible.

A former teacher dedicated to building relationships with Indigenous peoples, a former witness worker invested in intercultural relationships, a long-time pursuer of justice with Mennonite Central Committee (MCC), and a priest and canon theologian in the Anglican church are the recipients of Canadian Mennonite University's (CMU) 2019 Distinguished Alumni Awards.

In the political climate of our world today, a commitment to peacebuilding is more critical than ever. This summer, Canadian Mennonite University (CMU) welcomed 108 students and nine faculty from around the world to the Canadian School of Peacebuilding (CSOP) held on June 10-21.
CSOP is CMU's annual summer peace and justice institute, which offers two weeks of five-day intensive courses related to peace, justice, and conflict resolution taught by renowned international and local instructors.
