What makes graduate studies programs unique at CMU? Valerie Smith, Associate Registrar for Graduate Studies, says that "being rooted in the Anabaptist tradition, we specialize in peacebuilding and reconciliation-oriented programs, even in the ways we teach business. There is plenty of space for diversity within the programs, creating conversations that cross disciplinary boundaries. Dialogue is one of our greatest strengths."

Theme: The Canticles of Luke's Gospel
This month on Sunday@CMU, we are journeying together through the season of Advent. In these weeks leading up to the celebration of Jesus' birth, we will be exploring the canticles of three characters in the Gospel of Luke—Zechariah, Mary, and Simeon—who awaited a Saviour and sang of God's faithfulness, mercy, and salvation. And finally, we will celebrate Christmas Day!

When students enrolled in Wendy Kroeker's upper-level Peace and Conflict Transformation Studies (PACTS) course, they didn't expect to have classmates 12,000 kilometres away.
Kroeker, Assistant Professor of PACTS at CMU, is teaching Cultures of Violence, Cultures of Peace to 16 students at CMU and 11 students in the Philippines.

How running a family CSA is teaching these alumni newlyweds about togetherness.
Marta and Kelsey Bunnett Wiebe, newly married, are both alumni of CMU. You could say they met in the middle. Kelsey, who hails originally from Brooks, AB, completed CMU's Outtatown program before studying two years of Physics at Shaftesbury campus (he later transferred to the University of Manitoba to complete his degree with honours). Marta came to CMU from Atlantic Canada, toting a leadership scholarship for a her award-winning high-school essay, "Responsibility for a More Equitable World." Four years later, she walked away with a self-created Interdisciplinary Studies degree in Theological Ecology.

Theme: Naming and Dismantling Walls of Privilege; Seeing the Other as Beloved
This month on Sunday@CMU, we are hearing from Arlyn Friesen Epp. He performs several monologues and dramatic retellings of scripture, which explore naming and dismantling the walls of privilege that separate people. Arlyn is the Director of CommonWord, a Bookstore and Resource Centre jointly operated by CMU and Mennonite Church Canada.

"Soccer has a language we all understand, a music that everyone will dance to."
Gode Katembo, 23, is a fourth-year business student and leading defensemen for the CMU Men's Soccer Team. Playing for the Blazers, his job is to keep his eyes up, plan ahead, and protect his team's goal. Playing for his other home team, Manitoba's pan-African community, his approach has been similar: last summer, Katembo founded the Manitoba chapter of the African Cup of Nations (MACN), a recreational soccer league bringing diverse African communities together through sport and solidarity.

From April 27 to May 4, the Canadian Mennonite University (CMU) Singers were to spend a week singing and travelling across the country, all the way from Manitoba to British Columbia. Unfortunately, the choir tour had to be cancelled—one of the many casualties of the COVID-19 pandemic.
But that didn't stop the choir from connecting. Instead of boarding a bus every morning, the singers were greeted daily by a new email from Dr. Janet Brenneman, Associate Professor of Music and conductor of the CMU Singers.

A CMU student has been awarded a prestigious Canada Graduate Scholarship worth $17,500 by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC). This is the first year CMU has been eligible to distribute this scholarship, due to the university's successful federal research funding.
Sarah Deckert is a student in CMU's Graduate School of Theology and Ministry, working on a Master of Arts in Theological Studies. The SSHRC scholarship will go towards the work she is doing on her thesis, which is currently titled, "Embodied Pneumatology: The Role of the Holy Spirit in Healing the Wounds of Colonialism."
