Cross-continental research: CMU business faculty dive into UK economics

Two Canadian Mennonite University (CMU) faculty hopped the pond this past summer, not just to see the English countryside, visit Buckingham Palace, or catch a football game. They were there strictly for work purposes and to pursue extended research in their fields. Well, maybe also to see a little bit of countryside.
Jerry Buckland, Professor of International Development Studies and Craig Martin, Assistant Professor of Business may not have been in the UK for the same project, but their economic back (IDS) grounds mean both will bring back a wealth of valuable reports and material that will help sustain CMU's business and IDS studies.

For people living in the Palestinian territories, anger and frustration are daily experiences. That's why two Winnipeggers went there in late July to teach a course on conflict-resolution skills.
Karen Ridd, who teaches conflict resolution studies at Canadian Mennonite University, and Izzy Hawamda, a teacher at Maples Collegiate and an instructor at CMU visited An-Najah University in Nablus in the West Bank.
The goal was to teach the 22 students who signed up for the course about ways to deal with their anger, both internally and inter-personally, and to help others manage their frustrations with daily living under occupation.

According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), as of mid-2022, there are 32.5 million refugees worldwide. That number jumps to 53.1 million internally displaced people and expands yet again to 103 million when considering forcibly displaced people worldwide.

Levi Klassen's (CMU '22) second week working at the National Microbiology Laboratory (NML) changed abruptly and without warning, pitching him into an expedited project running from May to November researching and analyzing treatments for the recent outbreak of mpox (the disease formerly known as monkeypox).
A summer of what he thought would be spent organizing files and aiding with odd jobs relating to research ended up leading to publishing a report in the landmark journal Science Translational Medicine in November. Because of his valuable contributions, Klassen, in affiliation with Canadian Mennonite University (CMU), received co-first authorship on the report.

Dr. Jobb Arnold, Assistant Professor of Conflict Resolution Studies, has taught at Menno Simons College and CMU since 2015.
What do you love about your work here?
An element I really like about CMU and working here is it's got a practice orientation; people care about what happens in the world. This is really close to my heart, having worked in places like Rwanda and Northern Ireland and indeed here in Winnipeg. There's a lot of people suffering and there's a lot of hurt, so working in the conflict resolution department, one of the things I've always really valued is seeing people's lives change for the better. I think that's something that's not just an intellectual exercise, but it's an applied question of implementation.

The spring of 2021 saw the release of Germinating Conversations: Stories from Sustained Rural-Urban Dialogue on Food, Faith, Farming, and the Land. Edited by Marta Bunnett Wiebe, a recent graduate of Canadian Mennonite University (CMU) and current Peace and Advocacy Coordinator at MCC Manitoba, and collaboratively published by CMU, A Rocha, Canadian Foodgrains Bank, and Mennonite Central Committee Manitoba, the book emerged out of over a 10-year-long period of class discussions, listening events, and public dialogues between urban and rural farmers in Manitoba. The book surfaces out of these various initiatives producing germinating conversations centred around reconciliation, food production, and ecological crisis. With over 30 participants of both rural and urban contexts, the book attempts to mirror the kind of dialogue, and most importantly, the kind of listening that is required for real conversations to take place.
