Astrophysicist is CMU’s 2020 Scientist in Residence

Dr. Deborah Haarsma (PhD) is no stranger to frontier work. She has studied galaxy clusters, the curvature of space, and the expansion of the universe using telescopes around the world and in orbit. Privately, her research in astrophysics takes her to the very edge of human knowledge and comprehension.

Graham Peters is completing his fourth and final year of a Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Studies. He arrived on campus in the first year of CMU's expanded Biology program and, though he was not yet sure what he wanted to do, he quickly began to rediscover and expand his love of ecology. This led to a major in Environmental Studies, and a practicum focused on conservation ecology.

An instructor from Canadian Mennonite University's Menno Simons College (MSC) and a team of other professors are the recipients of a prestigious federal grant.
Karen Ridd, Instructor in Peace and Conflict Resolution Studies, received a three-year Partnership Development Grant worth $119,000 through the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC).

Dr. Nicolas Malagon, the new Assistant Professor of Biology, will begin teaching in September 2019 for a three-year term.

Dr. Dennis R. Venema travels across the country engaging in conversations about how evolution and Christian faith can co-exist. While, as an Evangelical Christian, he grew up convinced that belief in evolution meant being an unfaithful, his views have shifted significantly over time.
Venema is Professor of Biology at Trinity Western University (TWU) in Langley, B.C. and was Scientist in Residence at Canadian Mennonite University (CMU) from February 4-6, 2019. He spoke in classes, in a student forum and chapel, and offered a public lecture, exploring Christian understandings of creation in light of evolution, and how studying the created order can serve as a form of worship.

Dr. Dennis R. Venema (PhD, University of British Columbia) is Professor of Biology at Trinity Western University (Langley, British Columbia, Canada). He is co-author, with theologian Scot McKnight, of Adam and the Genome: Reading Scripture after Genetic Science (Brazos, 2017).

Starting in Fall 2018, Canadian Mennonite University (CMU) will offer four new Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree options as part of its academic programming—General (three-year), Mathematics (three-year), Biology (four-year), and Mathematics (four-year).
The BA Mathematics degrees will remain, with no change, serving students looking for more flexible elective space. The addition of a BSc to CMU's offerings is not only a response to growing demand, but is a natural fit, given the university's mission.

A Canadian Mennonite University (CMU) professor is the recipient of a prestigious federal grant.
Dr. Brian Froese, Associate Professor of History, received a five-year grant worth $93,000 through the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC). Froese will use the grant for a research project addressing the intersection of conservative religion and politics in Western Canada from the 1880s to 1960s.
