Doktorvater: How Dietrich Bartel is bringing a teacher’s heart to research communication

In German, the word for a doctoral supervisor is doktorvater, or "doctor father." No phrase could better express the spirit of pedagogical generosity and delight which critics have identified in the work of Music Professor Emeritus, Dietrich Bartel.
Bartel has been teaching at CMU since before it existed, beginning with CMBC back in 1985. Though he now teaches only part-time, Bartel's passion as an instructor is unflagging. In the classroom he is beloved for his animated and sympathetic teaching style, his expertise, and his sensitivity to the connections between music and discipleship. Outside of school, Bartel puts his specialized knowledge and talents to work for the wider community, serving as music director and organist of All Saints Anglican Church in Winnipeg. Between times he also sustains a vibrant research life, most recently exampled in his 2018 annotated translation with commentary of Andreas Werkmeister's 1707 music theory treatise Musikalische Paradoxal-Discourse.

Justin Neufeld has been an Instructor of Philosophy at CMU since 2008.
What are you teaching right now that you're most excited about?
This winter I'm teaching Disability and Difference: Philosophical and Theological Perspectives. It's a class that I've really come to under the influence of students here at CMU. Years ago, a student wanted to do an independent study on disability, and I had more interest than expertise, but we were willing to kind of work on it together, and that gave me confidence a couple of years later to offer a course on the subject. This year will be the second time I'm teaching it.
MSC professor awarded grant to continue community meth response training

Dr. Jobb Arnold, Assistant Professor of Conflict Resolution Studies at Canadian Mennonite University's Menno Simons College (MSC), has received a grant of $5,000 from the City of Winnipeg's inaugural Community Safety and Crime Prevention program.
Winnipeg is experiencing a methamphetamine (meth) crisis of proportions larger than the city has ever seen, and Arnold is tackling the issue head-on. He developed a community meth response training resource and ran the first sessions with it over the fall of 2019 for organizations like the Addictions Foundation of Manitoba and some of the city's crisis social workers.

As Stephanie Stobbe (Menno Simons College) and team prepare for the project's next phase, key players are adding their voices to the record, including Joe Clark, PM during the height of Southeast Asian immigration to Canada.
Between 1975 and 1980 Canada resettled 69,200 South East Asian refugees. Today Stephanie Stobbe, of Menno Simons College, along with a team of researchers, are working to ensure their experiences will be preserved for generations to come.
Portable CMU: how a university of the church takes care of its roots

Accordingly, CMU belongs to the many-membered church body that first raised it up and nurtures it to this day. Enter Portable CMU. Former president/professor emeritus Dr. Gerald Gerbrandt, the program's first director, says "one of the great things about the offering is that from the beginning, it was congregation-instigated."

Dr. Matthew Pauls, Assistant Professor of Music, has taught at CMU since 2015.
What do you love about your work here?
I wear a few different hats, so I see students in different kinds of places: one on one in the voice studio, in a classroom, and then in men's chorus. They each have a very different flavour and I enjoy the variety. I love that because of the size of the institution, you get a chance to get to know students better. In a place like the voice studio, where I don't just teach students for one semester, I get to see them grow over a longer period of time and that's very rewarding.

Earlier this summer, the Mennonite Brethren (MB) Historical Commission awarded CMU professor Dr. Christine Longhurst and CMU student Marnie Klassen a grant and scholarship, respectively.
Longhurst, Assistant Professor of Music and Worship, received an MB Studies Project Grant for the second phase of her research project exploring how worship in Canadian MB churches has changed over the last 40 years, specifically focusing on worship music and the shift from a traditional to a more contemporary style.
