Through the lens: How CMU helped an Indigenous storyteller find her voice
Gindalee Ouskun points to the great paradox in her life—she is shy and introverted, yet her work is public-facing and relational. "It's kind of ironic that I would choose a career where ... I'm always interacting with people and really putting myself out there," she laughs. "But being in the role brings out a sort of confidence that I don't necessarily always have."

Perseverance, pilgrimage, and the Bitter Sweet Trail
On October 24, 2020, Kenji Dyck (BA '19, Communications and Media) premiered his documentary Bitter Sweet Trail: Japanese Canadians and the Alberta Sugar Beets, which followed a 2019 bus tour through southern Alberta. Produced by David Iwaasa, and in partnership with Nikkei National Museum, the film tells the story of many Japanese sugar beet farmers who experienced internment, dispossession, and detainment through the Second World War. Tour participants, made up of Japanese Canadians who farmed sugar beets in the mid-20th century, visited sites that played a significant role in Japanese Canadian history. For most Japanese Canadians, this was a time of racial persecution as well as a time of persistence. "The tour and the film," Dyck explains, "is to remember not only the injustice but also the perseverance of the Japanese Canadian people."

Alumni Profile: Bethany Daman, BA Communications (’17)
For many, work and passion necessarily become parallel pursuits. But for 2017 grad Bethany Daman, working at Manitoba's Green Action Centre (GAC) enabled her to fuse the two, developing her professional gifts in direct service of her passion for social justice.
Daman, who earned her CMU degree in Communications and Media, has spent the last 18 months working for GAC as its Living Green, Living Well Coordinator—a job centred around community outreach and education regarding the many ways that living greener improves individual and community wellness.

Alumni Profile: Christy Anderson (CMU '11)
Christy Anderson graduated in 2011 with a 4-year Bachelor of Arts degree, majoring in Communications and Media from CMU.
Anderson, whose heritage is half First Nations, completed her practicum during the summer of 2011 at the Aboriginal People’s Television Network (APTN) under the Executive Director of APTN West, Naomi Clarke.
