Business students’ project yields invaluable workplace experience at a critical time

Toward the end of the 2020 winter semester, just ahead of the global COVID-19 pandemic, senior students in CMU's BA Business program were working with member companies in CMU's associated Centre for Resilience, as part of their term project for BUSI-4020: Business and Organizational Policy.

Despite all the uncertainty and obstacles the COVID-19 pandemic has caused, CMU is committed to working towards a bright future by continuing to deliver quality programming and education. This has included appointing John Balsillie as Vice President, Administration and Finance.
John Balsillie has spent the past six years as Executive Director of the Manitoba Band Association and the Canadian Band Association. Prior to that he was General Manager of St. John's Music. He is no stranger to CMU, though. He has taught as a sessional instructor in CMU's Redekop School of Business for five years.

CMU alumna Anneli Loepp Thiessen has been awarded the University of Rochester's coveted Yamaha Fellowship: a full-ride scholarship to study for one intensive week at the university's Eastman Leadership Academy this summer.
Limited to just 25 people, the program will include mentorship from faculty, training in essential skills like grant-writing, and support in developing a personal project of each Fellow's choice. Loepp Thiessen says her passion project will, "as always," have a feminist objective:

Employers today are looking for people with strong communication skills. Teamwork requires people who can think across mediums and skill sets, who write well and present well, combining great ideas and great writing with graphic and other media skills.
At CMU, we know that a broad base makes a better specialist. Consequently, we believe that the best way for an aspiring communications specialist to develop themselves is to spend time learning the fundamentals—reading, writing, and critical thinking—in company with the world's great literature, all while developing and exercising specialized skills through applied practise, crafting their own original stories, images, films, and audio recordings.
