CMU shaping what quality work-integrated learning looks like in Canada

Canadian Mennonite University (CMU) has been selected as one of the top institutions in Canada to develop a national quality work-integrated learning (QWIL) certification.
In collaboration with 12 other institutions, this venture operates through Canada's leading organization in the field, Co-operative Education and Work-Integrated Learning (CEWIL).

CMU alumna transforms dream for justice through peace program

CMU alumna Odelia Duffus wanted to be a lawyer after she graduated high school. Six years later, she's liaising with the court—but not in the role she expected.
Duffus is a mediator and caseworker with Mediation Services, a Winnipeg-based organization offering conflict resolution and training to workplaces, families, and communities. She wants to make a safer and more just future for all people involved in conflict, by navigating it in ways alternative to conventional punishment. Through mediation, she acts as a neutral third party that hears each side's perspective and helps create an agreement that benefits everyone and an appropriate solution.

Christine Kampen Robinson, director of practicum; director of the Center for Career and Vocation at Canadian Mennonite University (CMU), has been selected to join an elite three-year research seminar focused on work-integrated learning (WIL). The international forum will be hosted and organized by the Center for Engaged Learning at Elon University in North Carolina.

Ask any Canadian Mennonite University (CMU) graduate the most impactful learning experience during their undergrad, and they will most likely say their practicum placement.
As the only university in Canada that includes a work-integrated learning placement for all undergraduates, CMU's Practicum Program gives students practical, hands-on opportunities to work in their desired fields of study. Most students look at their practicum placement as a turning point in their education; they get a fully realized vision of the types of impacts they can make in the world and can be inspired to reach further heights in their academics or career.

Dr. Christine Kampen Robinson has worked at CMU part-time since 2018 and full-time since 2020. She is Director of the Centre for Career and Vocation, Director of Practicum, and Teaching Assistant Professor of Practicum and Social Science.
What do you love about your work here?
One of the things I love most is the opportunity I have to listen to students' stories. Not just in order to find a placement that is a good fit for them, but really to give them the space to talk about who they are and what they care about, what kinds of connections they see between their academics and other work they're doing and problems they want to solve in the world, and working with them to find those connections.

When Amelia Pahl envisioned how her practicum would go, she didn't expect she would be dissecting an 18th century prayer book and seeing how it could be used for worship today. Yet this was one of the many tasks she took on this summer.
Pahl, a fourth-year CMU student doing an interdisciplinary degree in Religion and Narrative, did a three-month practicum placement with Together in Worship, a website of free Anabaptist worship resources that was launched this fall.

"My primary experience of the inner workings of a church has been gathered under a pandemic. [...] The variety is endlessly surprising, delightful, tiring, invigorating, and of course, exciting."
Marina 'Marnie' Klassen, 22, is in her fifth and final year of an interdisciplinary BA in Social Theology, with Communications and Media minor. Over the last few months, she has been working through a pastoral internship with Home Street Mennonite Church in Winnipeg, in fulfillment of her CMU practicum.

The Practicum program at CMU is integral to the learning experience. In fact, every student is required to complete a practicum in order to graduate. It is these opportunities that help students weave together their learning in the classroom with their interests outside of it. CMU is committed to continue growing and enriching this program, which has included appointing Dr. Christine Kampen Robinson as Director of Practica.
