CMU alumna carries family tradition into a new generation

Kaylene Blackwood (CMU '26) started playing the steel drums when she was five years old. There's video footage of her as a child performing in the Caribbean pavilion at Folklorama, Winnipeg's annual multicultural festival that celebrates diverse cultures through pavilions featuring food, live entertainment, and cultural exhibits. All you can see are her little feet standing on a stool, her arms barely reaching the instrument. Now at 26 years old, she is the leader of her ensemble and plays an integral role in the Caribbean pavilion both on and off the stage.

CMU student helps team place third in innovative business competition

When Rosalyn Dao, a student in the Redekop School of Business at CMU, heard about an opportunity to spend her weekend solving a business challenge for a real company and presenting it before an audience—all within 48 hours, and with a team she had never met—she was eager to take on the challenge.

The opportunity was Sprint to Innovate: The Innovation Challenge, powered by Canada Life. This year's edition, running January 30 to February 1, brought together about 100 students in technology and business from post-secondary institutions across Manitoba. Each team of four to six students raced to create a solution and viable prototype for a challenge presented by an industry organization, then prepare and deliver a pitch before the weekend was over. Dao's team, which included her and five RRC Polytech students, placed third.

CMU students volunteer to rebuild homes after U.S. wildfire

Two years after a wildfire devastated Elk, Washington, ten students from Canadian Mennonite University joined Mennonite Disaster Service (MDS) to help residents rebuild their lives and homes from the ground up.

The students spent their reading week on reconstruction projects, sanding drywall, mudding walls, and listening to residents recount the sudden loss of their homes.

Brewing purpose: Stephen Kang builds Prairie Solar Café

Throughout Manitoba's milder seasons, you can find Stephen Kang pulling shots of espresso, brewing tea, and pouring kombucha on tap from his small solar-powered trailer, Prairie Solar Café.

His inspiration for this mobile coffee shop stems from a young age. "I really love food trucks," he says. "Growing up, I would go to some of the food truck festivals as a kid and be like, this is the coolest thing ever, and the food is amazing!" What he didn't love were the trucks' generators—noisy, smelly, and overstimulating. He wanted to maintain the joy of the food truck, while also creating a quieter, more relaxing experience that prioritizes sustainability.

Dean Dueck began his studies at CMU in 2009, transferring from Steinbach Bible College (SBC). "CMU had a really good relationship and good credit transfers between the two universities," he says. They were there strictly for work purposes and to pursue extended research in their fields. Well, maybe also to see a little bit of countryside.
