CMU alumna carries family tradition into a new generation

Kaylene Blackwood (CMU '26) started playing the steel drums when she was five years old. There's video footage of her as a child performing in the Caribbean pavilion at Folklorama, Winnipeg's annual multicultural festival that celebrates diverse cultures through pavilions featuring food, live entertainment, and cultural exhibits. All you can see are her little feet standing on a stool, her arms barely reaching the instrument. Now at 26 years old, she is the leader of her ensemble and plays an integral role in the Caribbean pavilion both on and off the stage.

CMU alumna earns national recognition as a rising writer

A national writing award is helping CMU alumna Emma Siemens take the next step toward a career in journalism.

The 2023 social sciences graduate is the recent recipient of the Wendy Elaine Nelles Award from the Word Guild, an organization of Canadian Christian writers and editors. The award recognizes emerging writers studying journalism, literature, media, and communications in Canada and includes an $850 prize to support their professional development.

Ninety-one undergraduate and graduate students celebrated the completion of their degrees at Canadian Mennonite University's 25th annual convocation ceremony on Saturday, April 25.

Knox United Church was full of faculty, staff, students, family, and friends , celebrating the accomplishments of the Class of 2026 as another academic year came to a close.

CMU to honour Dr. Nora Murdock with 2026 CMU PAX Award

Dr. Nora Murdock, an educator, consultant, and administrator whose career has been committed to strengthening First Nations education in Manitoba, will be awarded the 2026 CMU PAX Award.

Murdock is a leader whose dedication to First Nations education, guided by a postcolonial theoretical framework, is informed by the experiences, perspectives, and lives of Indigenous peoples.

2026 CMU Leadership Scholarship awarded

Canadian Mennonite University (CMU) is pleased to announce the winners of the 2026 Leadership Scholarship: Elia Koslowsky-Wiebe (Westgate Mennonite Collegiate; Winnipeg, MB) and Gabriel Gray (Vancouver Technical Secondary School; Vancouver, BC).

The prestigious scholarship is granted annually to two high school graduates who demonstrate significant leadership ability, academic excellence, personal character, service, and vision. The award is worth up to $20,000 over four years of study, an increase in funds per recipient since last year.

Verna Wiebe, Teaching Assistant Professor of Music, worked at CMU and its predecessor college CMBC for 37 years, starting in 1988 and retiring in 2025. She and Dr. Paul Doerksen, Associate Professor of Theology and Anabaptist Studies and P.M. Friesen Co-Chair in Biblical and Theological Studies, are co-recipients of the 2025 Kay and Lorne Dick Teaching Excellence Award.
