From martyrology to herpetology: A CMU alum's global journey of curiosity, community, and conservation

A few days after graduating from CMU in 2025, Tai Linklater was in an airplane on the way to the Netherlands. The 23-year-old from Altona, MB travelled an ocean away from CMU, and yet it was present in almost every adventure of their two-week trip, a microcosm of their university experience: curiosity and community.

While at CMU, Linklater took a course on The Martyrs Mirror, a chronicle of the persecution and martyrdom of Anabaptist Christians particularly in the 16th century, with Professor of Philosophy and Theology Chris Huebner. Linklater and a fellow classmate met up with Huebner, who was on sabbatical doing research in Amsterdam, and together they toured many of the historical sites where the book's stories took place. They even did an escape room based on one of the martyr accounts, in the very area where it occurred hundreds of years ago.

CMU celebrates the Class of 2025: a landmark year in the CMU story

Under the vaulted arched ceilings of the historic Knox United Church in downtown Winnipeg, Canadian Mennonite University (CMU) celebrated its 25th graduating class on April 26, 2025. This landmark year for the university saw 97 graduates receive their diplomas in front of a large gathering of family, friends, CMU faculty, and staff.

CMU President Cheryl Pauls opened the ceremony by saying, "As a university moved and transformed by the life and teachings of Jesus Christ, CMU is gifted by the diverse range of people and communities who entrust themselves to learn together."

CMU student perseveres, receives one of four national scholarships

If you looked at photos from CMU student Tai Linklater's childhood, you'd see countless shots of her holding different reptiles, unable to control the excitement on her face. Her dream career was to be a herpetologist, studying reptiles and amphibians. Until she found out it required calculus.

That's because Linklater has Specific Learning Disorder, a disability that in her case manifests itself in trouble with visual spatial awareness and extreme difficulties with mathematics.
