Refugee exhibition curated by CMU professor arrives in Manitoba

A travelling exhibition called, Hearts of Freedom: Stories of Southeast Asian Refugees, is being showcased in the Manitoba Museum's Festival Hall from January 5 until April 7.
Dr. Stephanie Phetsamay Stobbe, Associate Professor and Chair of Conflict Resolution Studies at Canadian Mennonite University, curated the exhibition. It is the product of a larger Hearts of Freedom research project, which Stobbe worked on with four other researchers, beginning in 2018.

Two Canadian Mennonite University (CMU) faculty hopped the pond this past summer, not just to see the English countryside, visit Buckingham Palace, or catch a football game. They were there strictly for work purposes and to pursue extended research in their fields. Well, maybe also to see a little bit of countryside.
Jerry Buckland, Professor of International Development Studies and Craig Martin, Assistant Professor of Business may not have been in the UK for the same project, but their economic back (IDS) grounds mean both will bring back a wealth of valuable reports and material that will help sustain CMU's business and IDS studies.

Canadian Mennonite University (CMU) is pleased to collaborate with Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) Canada in a new project, Locally-Led Indigenous Nature-based Solutions for Climate Change Adaptation in Zimbabwe (LINCZ).
This project is made possible with the support of Global Affairs Canada, which has allocated up to $15 million to MCC. This initiative will include funding to CMU to collaborate with Zimbabwean academic and development organizations involved in the project.

According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), as of mid-2022, there are 32.5 million refugees worldwide. That number jumps to 53.1 million internally displaced people and expands yet again to 103 million when considering forcibly displaced people worldwide.

Dr. Kirit Patel of Menno Simons College (MSC) with Dr. Aruna Kumar Malik of Gujarat National Law University in India and Dr. Alan Diduck of the University of Winnipeg launched a new book, Advancing Environmental Justice for Marginalized Communities in India: Progress, Challenges and Opportunities, in September 2021. It features many contributions from MSC students, exploring environmental justice and social equity in India.

Peace Research: The Canadian Journal of Peace and Conflict Studies has been in publication for over 50 years, and hasn't stopped even through pandemic-imposed challenges. Menno Simons College (MSC), a program centre of CMU, launched the journal's 53rd volume this spring.
In continuous publication since 1969, with numerous issues dating back even earlier to the 1950s, Peace Research is Canada's oldest and primary scholarly journal in its field. Published biannually and read by subscribers across the globe, the multi-disciplinary journal publishes academic articles and book reviews on issues of conflict, violence, poverty, religion, justice, peace, and international development.

The team behind Li Keur, Riel's Heart of the North launched an innovative Indigenous language database this spring.
Li Keur is a new dramatic musical work co-created by Métis poet and scholar Dr. Suzanne Steele, who wrote the libretto, and CMU Adjunct Professor of Music Neil Weisensel, who composed the music alongside Métis fiddler Alex Kusturok. It is a reimagining of Louis Riel's "missing" years from 1870–72 and the strong women that surrounded him.

Dr. John Brubacher visits the library every day. But instead of books, this library contains millions of yeast clones.
Brubacher is Assistant Professor of Biology at Canadian Mennonite University (CMU), but is currently on a three-year research leave, of which he has two years left. He's working at the Morgridge Institute for Research in Madison, WI as Visiting Assistant Scientist in the institute's Newmark Lab. Researchers there utilize the tools of molecular cell biology and functional genomics to address several major biological problems.

A CMU student has been awarded a prestigious Canada Graduate Scholarship worth $17,500 by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC). This is the first year CMU has been eligible to distribute this scholarship, due to the university's successful federal research funding.
Sarah Deckert is a student in CMU's Graduate School of Theology and Ministry, working on a Master of Arts in Theological Studies. The SSHRC scholarship will go towards the work she is doing on her thesis, which is currently titled, "Embodied Pneumatology: The Role of the Holy Spirit in Healing the Wounds of Colonialism."

In German, the word for a doctoral supervisor is doktorvater, or "doctor father." No phrase could better express the spirit of pedagogical generosity and delight which critics have identified in the work of Music Professor Emeritus, Dietrich Bartel.
Bartel has been teaching at CMU since before it existed, beginning with CMBC back in 1985. Though he now teaches only part-time, Bartel's passion as an instructor is unflagging. In the classroom he is beloved for his animated and sympathetic teaching style, his expertise, and his sensitivity to the connections between music and discipleship. Outside of school, Bartel puts his specialized knowledge and talents to work for the wider community, serving as music director and organist of All Saints Anglican Church in Winnipeg. Between times he also sustains a vibrant research life, most recently exampled in his 2018 annotated translation with commentary of Andreas Werkmeister's 1707 music theory treatise Musikalische Paradoxal-Discourse.
