Canadian Mennonite University is thrilled to announce a bold new initiative that brings free dormitory housing to all first-year undergraduate students, beginning in Fall 2026. This transformative program is made possible through the generous support of a CMU donor who believed deeply in the power of community to shape academic success.

"Living in dorms at CMU is about finding your people, discovering your purpose, and stepping into a community that champions your academic growth. It's so much more than just a room." said Charlie Peronto, Vice-President Student Life and Campus Operations. "By removing cost barriers, we're opening the door for every student to begin their university journey surrounded by support, belonging, and opportunity. On Saturday, September 20 at 2:00 PM, Canadian Mennonite University will launch the new academic year with a celebration of the first district geothermal energy system at a Manitoba post-secondary education institution.

"As we welcome our students and community back to campus, I am proud to showcase this important milestone in our efforts to build a more sustainable future," said Dr. Cheryl Pauls, CMU President. "Poettcker Hall is just the first of many buildings we will connect to the district geothermal system on our journey to a net zero campus."

It was September 1991. I remember my arrival at Poettcker Hall like it was yesterday (although back then it didn't hold this name). I remember tentatively stepping into the dorm room that would be my home for the next eight months and meeting my new roommate who had already settled in to her half of the space. I can still taste the spicy stew of anticipation, excitement, and plain old nerves—the hallmark butterflies of young adult new beginnings. I'm sure many of you have similar memories.
