Canadian Mennonite University is thrilled to announce a bold new initiative that brings free dormitory housing to all first-year undergraduate students, beginning in Fall 2026. This transformative program is made possible through the generous support of a CMU donor who believed deeply in the power of community to shape academic success.
"Living in dorms at CMU is about finding your people, discovering your purpose, and stepping into a community that champions your academic growth. It's so much more than just a room." said Charlie Peronto, Vice-President Student Life and Campus Operations. "By removing cost barriers, we're opening the door for every student to begin their university journey surrounded by support, belonging, and opportunity. As far as we know the first program of its kind in Canada—this a transformational shift in Manitoba post-secondary."
The free shared accommodations dorm program applies to all domestic and international undergraduate students in their first year at CMU. To qualify for housing in Poettcker Hall residence, students must be enrolled in full-time studies (12 credit hours per semester) and participate in the university's meal plan.
Poettcker Hall recently underwent an $8.2 million renovation, completed in Fall 2025. Improvements include Western Canada's only post-secondary district geothermal heating/cooling system, gender-neutral and accessible washroom facilities, fire alarm upgrades, wheelchair accessibility, and the addition of a shared kitchenette,
The introduction of this initiative reflects the university's commitment to accessibility, whole-person education, and student flourishing. Data shows students who live in residence at CMU:
- Graduate 25% faster
- Earn GPAs at least 0.25 points higher—that's the difference between a B+ and an A
- Are twice as likely to participate in co-curricular activities that enhance leadership, collaboration, and career readiness
- Report better mental health outcomes, stronger friendships, and deeper engagement
"CMU is investing to create conditions where students can thrive academically, socially, and personally starting their first day at CMU. It reflects the our commitment to academic excellence and creating an environment where curiosity ignites, friendships thrive, and community takes root," said Dr. Cheryl Pauls, CMU President. "Student success is enhanced significantly when students learn together by living together. We have data to back this up."
The first year of free dorm equates to over $3,000 in student savings, but the advantages go far beyond. Additional benefits found through zero-commute living include reduced travel costs such as fuel/maintenance or bus fares, a smaller student carbon footprint, and the bonus of 160-240 hours of found time accumulated over the course of the school year that students can spend studying, socializing, or being physically active.
