You may think that most books about Mennonites wouldn't dare to begin with young adults drinking, smoking, and driving a car in donuts around a church parking lot, but author Jonathan Dyck isn't so sure.

Dyck (CMU '09) is the author of the award-winning graphic novel Shelterbelts, which explores themes of Queer identity, inclusive churches, the history of reconciliation with Indigenous peoples, and much more, all set in the fictional, sleepy Mennonite community of Hespeler.

Baritone Nathan Dyck winner of 15th annual Verna Mae Janzen Music Competition

Despite uncertainty and the changing circumstances of campus life under COVID-19, competitors in this year's Verna Mae Janzen Music Competition kept their focus.

Singing to a closed auditorium of adjudicators only instead of the usual community audience, seven finalists gave it their all: Michelle Fast (soprano), Georgeanne Van Helden (piano), Katy Unruh (soprano), Anna Schwartz (piano), Nathan Dyck (baritone), Anne Kelm (piano), and Johanna Klassen (soprano).

Clarinetist wins 2019 Verna Mae Janzen Music Competition

A clarinetist from Manitoba is the winner of the 14th annual Verna Mae Janzen Music Competition at Canadian Mennonite University (CMU).

Stephanie Wilson's performance earned her first place and the $700 prize that comes with it on Wednesday, March 20. She is the first clarinetist to ever win the competition.
