The end of an era at CMBC

From the late 1950s, until the late 1990s, for roughly 40 years, Canadian Mennonite Bible College (CMBC) experienced a time of remarkable stability and vitality. With numbing suddenness, the last representatives of that era passed from the scene within a single month late this spring.

When I arrived at CMBC as a student in the fall of 1964, CMBC was still a young institution, having been founded only 17 years earlier. Not surprisingly, the early years had been somewhat rocky, with inconsistent leadership and faculty. And yet the CMBC I arrived at felt confident and strong, an exciting place of academic and spiritual discovery.

Remembering the legacy of former CMBC President John H. Neufeld

On January 11, John H. Neufeld, former President and Associate Professor of Practical Theology at CMBC (from 1984-1997), passed away after many years of battling a series of severe health crises. Being the last long-term president before CMU became a university, Neufeld's presence and passion was a formative force that helped prepare the way for furthering the quality of education in what is now the CMU community.

Xplore program ventures into new territory during pandemic

When CMU's Xplore classes moved online for the fall 2020 semester due to COVID-19, Marlene Janzen was thrilled. Janzen lives in Ottawa, ON, so the new format meant she could participate for the first time.

"This was really interesting to me, to access these resources from CMU," she says, adding that she had a great experience in her course.

"Festschrift" honours CMU President Emeritus Gerald Gerbrandt

CMU Press is pleased to announce the release of a Festschrift honouring Dr. Gerald Gerbrandt, who served as Canadian Mennonite University’s first sole President.

Titled A University of the Church for the World: Essays in Honour of Gerald Gerbrandt, the Festschrift—a German word for a collection of writing that is meant to honour a scholar—is a series of essays that reflect on what it means to be a Mennonite university.
