CMU launches Mini U summer day camp program for children ages 6-12

CMU will launch Mini U, a new summer day camp program for children ages 6-12, beginning July 2026. Mini U is designed to provide a structured, engaging camp experience that combines hands-on learning, creativity, and physical activity in a safe and welcoming environment.

Mini U was developed in response to growing demand from families for full-day summer programming that combines structured learning with creative and physical activity. The program also builds on the unique values and existing strengths of CMU in education, arts, and athletics, positioning the university as a compelling first-choice option when families begin to consider post-secondary pathways. Mini U at CMU also creates meaningful leadership and employment opportunities for CMU students.

"We're thrilled to welcome young learners to CMU through Mini U," said Russell Willms, CMU Athletics Director and lead developer of the program. "This initiative reflects our commitment to hands-on learning, community connection, and creating a safe, enriching environment for children to explore and grow."

Registration for the inaugural season opens February 9, 2026.

The inaugural summer of Mini U will feature two themed camps, each running one week at a time, on alternate weeks:

  • The Discovery Lab: a science-focused camp featuring experiments, STEM challenges, outdoor exploration, and collaborative projects
  • The Creative Legends: an arts-focused camp exploring visual art, music, drama, and creative storytelling alongside games and outdoor activities

2026 camp schedule

Mini U will run for six weeks during summer 2026, alternating between the science and art themes:

  • July 13–17: Creative Legends
  • July 20–24: Discovery Lab
  • July 27–31: Creative Legends
  • August 10–14: Discovery Lab
  • August 17–21: Creative Legends
  • August 24–28: Discovery Lab

Daily schedule and location

Camp programming runs from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, with drop-off between 8:30 and 9:00 AM and pick-up between 4:00 and 4:30 PM. Programming includes structured morning and afternoon activities, supervised lunch time, and scheduled snack breaks.

Drop-off and pick-up will take place at Assiniboine Castle, 500 Shaftesbury Blvd. Weather permitting, check-in and pick-up will occur outdoors; indoor space will be used as needed.

Supervision and safety

Mini U will be staffed by trained team members who have completed criminal record and child abuse registry checks. Campers will be grouped by age to support developmentally appropriate activities.

Staff-to-camper ratios will be:

  • ages 6–8: 6:1
  • ages 9–12: 10:1

Food and care

Mini U will provide two snacks daily. Families may send additional snacks, and a meal plan option will be available for purchase during registration.
