Where or how do students give you hope?

I got into this business precisely because of that. Every day, students give me hope. Sometimes stuff happens in the classroom—I call it a change in plot. You walk in and you think, I know how the story is going to play out...and what I think we sometimes take for granted is that actually a person's place in the story can change the plot of the story. I think that's the place where students give me the most hope, because each of those persons sitting there with me in the classroom can change the outcome of the conversation. That open-ended plot of any interpersonal encounter gives me the greatest hope, and students do that all the time.

The first veterinary college was created in response to a cattle plague decimating southern France in the middle of the 18th century. Though microbiology had not yet been established as a concrete area of study, the first veterinary scientists worked tirelessly in search of a remedy, and within a few years, the plague was controlled, the cattle population was revived, and France resumed economic stability.

Upcoming Mennonite Community Orchestra concert showcases the power of love

The power of love will be explored at a concert presented by the Mennonite Community Orchestra in collaboration with goodwill partner Mennonite Disaster Service.

The concert on November 20 at Lutheran Church of the Cross, will provide occasion through music and story to reflect on the power of love. Musical selections will relate to the power of love through their compositional structure, the dramatic stories which they accompany or accounts of the inspiration for their conception. Stories from the Mennonite Disaster Service, a relief agency which rebuilds homes destroyed by natural disasters, will represent love in action.

Repertoire for the concert will feature several Canadian connections. Works by former Winnipegger Andrew Balfour as well as by John Estacio and Geoffrey Ridout will be performed. CMU student Anne Kelm, recent winner of the CMU Verna Mae Janzen Music Competition, will perform a movement of Mendelssohn's Piano Concerto #1.

This will be the first concert in which a goodwill partner collaborates with the Mennonite Community Orchestra. This partnership represents a relationship between two groups which have values community in common and which share resources in a non-monetary way.

Mennonite Community Orchestra, which is the Orchestra in Residence for CMU, is led by Andrea Bell. The concert is on Sunday, November 20 at 3:00 PM at Lutheran Church of the Cross, 560 Arlignton St. Tickets are $20 for adults, $10 for students, and free for children 12 and under accompanied by an adult, and are available at the door or by contacting mennonitecommunityorchestra.ca.
