From Student to Teacher: A Journey of Faith, Learning, and Community

Kenny Wollmann is a high school educator, teaching primarily Bible, theology, and world religions—but not in a typical classroom. Wollmann teaches students online in Hutterite communities across Manitoba and even into the northern United States.
Hutterites are communal Anabaptist Christian groups who live in rural colonies, share belongings and resources, and often sustain themselves through agriculture. With only small groups of students in each community, sharing resources, like teachers who are each experts in their subjects, helps ensure a robust learning program.

CMU was a place of transition, community, and discovery for Evan Klassen, Executive Director of the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre (MTC).
"My first gig was on this stage here in the ... [Laudamus Auditorium]," he says, explaining that he helped organize a theatre production of A Man for All Seasons with a small group of fellow students. He stage-managed, ran sound cues, and discovered the kind of collaborative, behind-the-scenes work that would eventually define his career.

When Everton McLennon stepped onto CMU's campus for the first time, he was not like the majority of students. He was in his 40s, with a full-time career and an engineering degree under his belt. But he had also been called to pastor his congregation, and he took that call seriously.
"I wanted to educate myself to better serve the congregation and gain a deeper understanding of theology," McLennon says. "Reading the Bible, I felt, did not provide me with full background and prepare me properly for the role of pastoral ministry, and CMU did that for me."

Heather Schellenberg was thrilled when she found out about CMU's new education degree program. As a teacher herself, she's excited about how this will allow CMU to send even more thoughtful, well-equipped grads out into the world to nurture the next generation. "I feel proud to have gone there, and I know it shaped me a lot," she says.

For Kyle Penner, CMU was where he learned how to think about faith, community, and leadership in ways that continue to shape his life today. "My time at CMU helped shape who I am and how I think in the world," he says.
After graduating in 2005 with a major in youth ministry, Penner reflects on the practical lessons CMU offered. Courses on preaching, church history, and biblical texts didn't just give him knowledge, he says they taught him how to communicate with clarity across generations. Something that he says comes in quite handy in his current role as the pastor of Grace Mennonite Church in Steinbach, MB.

Broadening Our Capacity to Love
This month on Sunday@CMU, we hear from Jeff Friesen, Co-Director of Leadership Ministries for Mennonite Church Manitoba. Jeff is an alumnus of CMU's undergraduate and graduate programs, and he spent almost 20 years as a pastor. In this sermon series, he focuses on the politics of God's love as seen in 1 John and Acts and he explores how we can broaden our capacity to love.

CMU student Karissa Durant has been awarded a prestigious Canada Graduate Scholarship Master's award worth $17,500.
The Government of Canada announced in March the results of the competition for the 2022/23 academic year. The scholarships are administered by Canada's federal granting agencies: the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council, and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council.

Renowned scholar and theologian Dr. Willie James Jennings is in high demand across North America. On his schedule this month is a trip to Canadian Mennonite University (CMU), where he'll be delivering the 2023 J.J. Thiessen Lecture.
He will deliver his lecture, titled, "Gathering the pieces that remain: Weaving life together from the fragments of faith, race, and land" on Friday, October 27 at 7:00 PM in person at Marpeck Commons (2299 Grant Ave.) and via livestream.

A growing need for spiritual care directors in Winnipeg hospitals and faith-based personal care homes has prompted the creation of a new program at Canadian Mennonite University.
The master of arts in spiritual care is being offered in collaboration with St. Boniface Hospital and Selkirk Mental Health Centre.
The need became evident during the COVID-19 pandemic, when half of 49 positions in the capital city became vacant due to retirements, said Kathleen Rempel Boschman, lead for spiritual care services at Winnipeg Regional Health Authority.
