Spiritual care director program seeks to fill crucial need (Winnipeg Free Press)
Tuesday, August 8, 2023 @ 2:22 PM
A growing need for spiritual care directors in Winnipeg hospitals and faith-based personal care homes has prompted the creation of a new program at Canadian Mennonite University.
The master of arts in spiritual care is being offered in collaboration with St. Boniface Hospital and Selkirk Mental Health Centre.
The need became evident during the COVID-19 pandemic, when half of 49 positions in the capital city became vacant due to retirements, said Kathleen Rempel Boschman, lead for spiritual care services at Winnipeg Regional Health Authority.

Assuming a new position teaching theology at Canadian Mennonite University (CMU), Rev. Dr. Sunder John Boopalan and his family arrived in Winnipeg in October 2020 after a move, during the pandemic, from their home in Boston, MA. Growing up in the religious context of Pondicherry, a former French colony in southeast India, Boopalan was raised by his mother, a nurse and Hindu convert to Christianity, and his father, a lab technician and preacher, who together attended the "Bakht Singh Assemblies," a multi-lingual and multi-ethnic indigenous (that is, without foreign missionary history) church movement. Describing the religious atmosphere of his upbringing, Boopalan states that "there was an interesting mix of theological influences that combined pietist, holiness, and charismatic movements. Services were four hours and included plenty of music played with indigenous Indian instruments and would always end in a love feast cooked by church members and shared sitting around mats on the floor."

What makes graduate studies programs unique at CMU? Valerie Smith, Associate Registrar for Graduate Studies, says that "being rooted in the Anabaptist tradition, we specialize in peacebuilding and reconciliation-oriented programs, even in the ways we teach business. There is plenty of space for diversity within the programs, creating conversations that cross disciplinary boundaries. Dialogue is one of our greatest strengths."

Dear students in the joint CMU/MB Seminary program,
You likely have heard that for reasons of financial exigency MB Seminary (MBS) informed CMU this spring of the Seminary's decision to withdraw from the Affiliation Agreement between MB Seminary and CMU and to do so by May 31, 2021. In withdrawing from this Agreement, MB Seminary will cease to invest in 1.5 faculty positions at CMU, those of Andrew Dyck (1.0) and Pierre Gilbert (0.5; Gilbert 's other half position always has been connected only to CMU and is not affected by the MBS change).

Justin Neufeld has been an Instructor of Philosophy at CMU since 2008.
What are you teaching right now that you're most excited about?
This winter I'm teaching Disability and Difference: Philosophical and Theological Perspectives. It's a class that I've really come to under the influence of students here at CMU. Years ago, a student wanted to do an independent study on disability, and I had more interest than expertise, but we were willing to kind of work on it together, and that gave me confidence a couple of years later to offer a course on the subject. This year will be the second time I'm teaching it.
