Something worth protecting: a practicum story

Graham Peters is completing his fourth and final year of a Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Studies. He arrived on campus in the first year of CMU's expanded Biology program and, though he was not yet sure what he wanted to do, he quickly began to rediscover and expand his love of ecology. This led to a major in Environmental Studies, and a practicum focused on conservation ecology.

When Nadya Langelotz decided to direct a summer camp, she thought it would require putting on hold one of her biggest passions: writing.
It was while working at the end of last semester in CMU's printing press, located in one of CMU's castle-like towers, that the fifth-year English major lamented to her friend that she wouldn't have time to write during the busy schedule of camp. When her friend suggested doing it as a practicum at camp, Langelotz doubted it would work. How could writing and camp go together?

This past semester I had the opportunity to walk with the Bear Clan Patrol as the practicum for my Community Development degree. The Bear Clan Patrol embodies an Indigenous-led, community-based approach to crime prevention activated by patrolling the streets of Winnipeg's North End five nights per week. It began as a response to the tragedy of our missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls.
