Difference and Disagreement: Lessons from scripture and a tradition of peacebuilding
This month on Sunday at CMU, we are hearing from Valerie Smith, Associate Registrar for Graduate Studies at CMU. She was previously Co-Director of CMU's Canadian School of Peacebuilding for its first 10 years, and co-edited the book, Voices of Harmony and Dissent, a collection of writing by peacebuilders who were instructors at the school. Valerie is also an alumna of Canadian Mennonite Bible College, a predecessor of CMU, and holds a Master of Divinity from Anabaptist Mennonite Biblical Seminary. In this series rebroadcast, she explores themes of difference and disagreement through lessons from scripture and traditions of peacebuilding.

Dr. Jodi Dueck-Read, Associate Professor of Conflict Resolution Studies and Peace and Conflict Transformation Studies, has worked at CMU since 2015. She and Dr. Candice Viddal, Associate Professor of Chemistry and Physics, are co-recipients of the 2023 Kay and Lorne Dick Teaching Excellence Award.
The award, established in 2022, is granted annually to two faculty members who best exemplify the CMU commitment to excellent teaching.

Karen Ridd, Teaching Associate Professor of Peace and Conflict Transformation Studies and of Conflict Resolution Studies, joined the CMU faculty in 2010 after more than a decade of sessional instructing. She and David Balzer, Associate Professor of Communications and Media, are co-recipients of the 2022 Kay and Lorne Dick Teaching Excellence Award.

At a time when many communities are wrestling with fear, polarization, and uncertainty, CMU is inviting community members to lend their voices to a new rapid-response community choir called Voices for Peace. This choir may be called upon to sing at community events, peaceful demonstrations, and public moments where shared song can help foster courage, solidarity, and hope.

Peace with Creation
This month on Sunday at CMU, we hear from CMU alumna Zoe Matties. Zoe is Manitoba Program Manager for A Rocha Canada, a Christian environmental organization dedicated to caring for creation through conservation research, education, and community engagement. In this new series of reflections, Zoe is exploring Peace with Creation, the theme of this year's Season of Creation—a period in the liturgical calendar dedicated to prayer, education, and action to protect the gift of God's creation.

For people living in the Palestinian territories, anger and frustration are daily experiences. That's why two Winnipeggers went there in late July to teach a course on conflict-resolution skills.
Karen Ridd, who teaches conflict resolution studies at Canadian Mennonite University, and Izzy Hawamda, a teacher at Maples Collegiate and an instructor at CMU visited An-Najah University in Nablus in the West Bank.
The goal was to teach the 22 students who signed up for the course about ways to deal with their anger, both internally and inter-personally, and to help others manage their frustrations with daily living under occupation.
