From basketball star to keeper of stories: CMU alum brings Mennonite history to life

Andrew Klassen Brown makes working in archives sound as exciting as an experimental jet test pilot.

The 32-year-old CMU alum works as the Archivist and Records Manager with Mennonite Central Committee Canada, serves as the vice-president of the Manitoba Mennonite Historical Society, and spends his free time visiting secluded attractions important to Mennonite history, such as the Mennonite Memorial Landing Site on the Banks of the Red River near Ste. Mennonite Heritage Archives part of groundbreaking storytelling project

When we think of preserving history in archives, our first thoughts might be of digging through boxes of grandma's things in the attic or leafing through yellowing photo albums. But that is not the whole picture.

The Mennonite Heritage Archives (MHA), located on CMU's campus and supported by CMU, is calling on Mennonites and Anabaptists to share their experiences during the remarkable historical, biological, and social events of 2020 as part of Anabaptist History Today (AHT), a groundbreaking collaborative storytelling project.

Theme: Stories from the Mennonite Heritage Archives

This month on Sunday@CMU, we are hearing from Conrad Stoesz. He will be sharing stories that have been preserved in documents and artifacts in the archives, which he also presents on his radio segment, Still Speaking. Conrad is the archivist at the Mennonite Heritage Archives, affiliated with CMU, where he has worked since 1999. He is also an alumnus of Canadian Mennonite Bible College, one of CMU's predecessor colleges.
