Faculty-alumni collaboration explores decolonizing music education in the classroom

Studying music education means learning scales and chord progressions, practicing how to move your hands while conducting, and planning out class schedules. But sometimes it also involves examining and re-evaluating the entire education system at its core.
This is what a group of CMU students did every week last semester, when they gathered for one of CMU's newest courses: Decolonizing Music Education, guided by Associate Professor of Music Janet Brenneman. Through listening, reading, discussing, and creating, students learned about the history and current forms of colonialism present in Canadian music education classrooms, and explored how to put the concepts of decolonization and indigenization into action.

A pianist from Fort Frances, Ontario is the winner of the 17th annual Verna Mae Janzen Music Competition at Canadian Mennonite University (CMU).
Anna Schwartz's performance in the finals, held on Friday, April 8 in CMU's Laudamus Auditorium, earned her first place and the $700 prize that comes with it.

This year's recipients are Micah Janzen, Madeline Hiebert, Lia Campbell-Enns, and Julia Sawatzky. Each were awarded $3,500 annually for up to four years, to a maximum of $14,000.
Canadian Mennonite University (CMU) takes every effort to make university accessible and affordable. In 2021/22, CMU administered over $750,000 in scholarships and bursaries to roughly 50% of the student population.

This month, we are rebroadcasting a series of meditations by Marnie Klassen, a CMU alumna who graduated with an interdisciplinary Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Theology. Throughout this series, Marnie explores what we can learn about Jesus from his many I AM statements in the Gospel of John.

Maybe it's that Canadian Mennonite University (CMU) is nestled delicately into the scenic Assiniboine Forest; possibly, it's a deeply embedded philosophy or theology, but it's clear that sustainability has always been important to CMU.
Suitably, CMU is once again Climate Smart certified for 2022—apt timing for Earth Day. This is CMU's second certification. The first was in 2020.

When Reezwana Yadallee heard that Mary Jo Leddy was teaching a course at the 2021 Canadian School of Peacebuilding (CSOP), she told herself she could not miss it.
Leddy is the author of Radical Gratitude, a book that greatly impacted Yadallee when she read it for her class on voluntary simplicity at Canadian Mennonite University (CMU). "[The book] forces you to do some self-introspection in a way, on yourself and what life actually really means," Yadallee said.

March 6, 2022 marked a momentous day for Canadian Mennonite University (CMU) Blazers Athletics. The Blazers men's volleyball team became the first-ever representative of the Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference (MCAC) at the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Volleyball National Championship.
Protracted titles aside, the Blazers are headed to nationals for the first time in CMU history.
