Hearts of Freedom | CMU Film Screening comments and Q&A

The Hearts of Freedom (HOF) is a national community project that collects and preserves the personal histories of refugees from Southeast Asia—Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia—who came to Canada between 1975 and 1985 and the Canadians who assisted them. The refugee oral histories were completed with funding from the Department of Canadian Heritage, the Department of Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada, and the DeFehr Foundation. One of the initial outcomes was the creation of a documentary film, Passage to Freedom (producer: Sheila Petzold), that features powerful oral histories of Southeast Asian refugees that made the dangerous journeys to Canada.

What began as a student's rough sketch on a napkin has now grown into a sweeping piano concerto commissioned by the Mennonite Community Orchestra (MCO).
Written by Liam Berry and performed by Georg Neuhofer, "Rains Dance" is a piece that carries great significance for the two Canadian Mennonite University (CMU) students. It's the consolidation of musical congeniality, collaboration, and years of friendship.

The Mennonite Community Orchestra in collaboration with the Association of United Ukrainian Canadians will present a musical tribute to Ukraine as part of its fall concert. The concert, titled The Power of Hope, will encourage solidarity with the people of Ukraine and other nations struggling for freedom while carrying hope in their hearts, despite being caught up in war.

A pianist from Inglis, Manitoba is the winner of the 18th annual Verna Mae Janzen Music Competition at Canadian Mennonite University (CMU).
Georg Neuhofer's performance in the finals, held on Thursday, March 23 in CMU's Laudamus Auditorium, earned him first place and the $700 prize that comes with it.

A pianist from Fort Frances, Ontario is the winner of the 17th annual Verna Mae Janzen Music Competition at Canadian Mennonite University (CMU).
Anna Schwartz's performance in the finals, held on Friday, April 8 in CMU's Laudamus Auditorium, earned her first place and the $700 prize that comes with it.

For the past 16 years, the CMU School of Music hosts the Verna Mae Janzen Music Competition for music students capable of performing at a high skill level. It is a time, as adjudicator Henrietta Schellenberg puts it, "of comradery and competition for music students, a chance to bring their art to the public, a jewel in the life of the musical calendar at CMU."
