CMU professor helps expand education access for displaced people

Dr. Stephanie Stobbe, Professor of Business and Peace and Conflict Transformation Studies at CMU, is helping lead a major seven-year-long research initiative focused on equitable access to education for displaced people.

The project, titled "Equitable Opportunities for Research and Tertiary Education for People with Lived Experiences of Displacement," received $2.5 million in funding from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC).

CMU alumna carries family tradition into a new generation

Kaylene Blackwood (CMU '26) started playing the steel drums when she was five years old. There's video footage of her as a child performing in the Caribbean pavilion at Folklorama, Winnipeg's annual multicultural festival that celebrates diverse cultures through pavilions featuring food, live entertainment, and cultural exhibits. All you can see are her little feet standing on a stool, her arms barely reaching the instrument. Now at 26 years old, she is the leader of her ensemble and plays an integral role in the Caribbean pavilion both on and off the stage.

A Theology of Communications

This month on Sunday at CMU, we're rebroadcasting sermons from David Balzer, Associate Professor of Communications and Media at CMU. David is an alumnus of Mennonite Brethren Bible College and holds a Master of Arts in Speech Communication from California State University in Fresno. He worked for more than a decade in broadcast radio and developed CMU's Communications and Media degree program. In this series, he delves into some key points of a theology of communications, considering how we might develop a biblical response to our unique technological era.

How one biology student found himself among PhD researchers

Ryan Bilous is getting used to being mistaken for a PhD candidate in mathematics, even though, in reality, he just finished his third year as a biology undergrad at CMU.

Bilous recently presented his mathematical biology research project at the 2026 Canadian Applied and Industrial Mathematics Society conference in Regina, Saskatchewan. His project focused on mathematically modeling neurons in epileptic seizures. The goal of the project was to mathematically predict when benzodiazepines, the first-line drug, should be delivered to prevent a seizure.

Honouring a life that continues to inspire

The Evelyn Kampen Memorial Scholarship Fund for Women's Volleyball was established at CMU in 2026 to honour the remarkable life and athletic legacy of Evelyn Kampen, an alumna (CMU '12) and former Blazer student-athlete and coach who passed away in 2025 after a courageous battle with cancer.

Even more than a recognition of her accomplishments on the court, the scholarship celebrates the values Kampen embodied: perseverance, leadership, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to helping others succeed.

CMU alumnus is transforming patient care through music one year after graduation

Just one year after graduating from CMU with a Bachelor of Music Therapy, Loghan Puhach is working in what he calls "a dream come true."

Upon completion ofhis internship at Riverview Health Centre in Winnipeg, Puhach successfully advocated for the creation of a full-time music therapy position. Today, as a Certified Music Therapist, he brings comfort, connection, and healing to patients and their families while helping expand access to music therapy across the health centre.

Lived and Living Faith in the Letter of James

This month on Sunday at CMU, we feature a new sermon series from Dr. Sheila Klassen-Wiebe, Associate Professor of New Testament at CMU. She is an alumnus of Canadian Mennonite Bible College and holds a PhD in Biblical Studies from Union Theological Seminary in Virginia. Sheila wrote a commentary on the letter of James for the Believers Church Bible Commentary series, which was published earlier this year. This month on the program, she explores several topics and texts in the letter of James that have to do with faith that is lived and living.
